El Elyon the God Most High — supreme authority, majesty, and sovereignty over all the earth, Psalm 47:2

The God Most High | Understanding God's Sovereign Rule

Introduction

The Bible reveals God as the Most High, the One who rules over heaven and earth. No one is above Him, and no authority can compare with His power and majesty.

When Melchizedek blessed Abram, he spoke of God as the Most High.

"He blessed him, and said, 'Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth. Blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.'"

Genesis 14:19-20 (WEB)

This title reminds believers that God reigns over all creation and accomplishes His purposes according to His will.

God Possesses Heaven and Earth

The Bible declares that everything belongs to God.

"Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth."

Genesis 14:19 (WEB)

God is not merely a ruler over one nation or one people. He is the Creator and Owner of all things.

The psalmist wrote:

"The earth is Yahweh's, with its fullness; the world, and those who dwell therein."

Psalm 24:1 (WEB)

Everything exists because of Him and belongs to Him.

God Reigns Over All Nations

The Lord's authority extends over every nation and every ruler.

"For Yahweh Most High is awesome. He is a great King over all the earth."

Psalm 47:2 (WEB)

Kings rise and fall, kingdoms come and go, but God's rule remains forever.

Nebuchadnezzar learned this truth after God humbled him.

"His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation. All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can hold back his hand, or ask him, 'What are you doing?'"

Daniel 4:34-35 (WEB)

The Most High rules over all human affairs.

God Is Above All Other Powers

Scripture repeatedly teaches that there is no one like the Lord.

"For you, Yahweh, are most high above all the earth. You are exalted far above all gods."

Psalm 97:9 (WEB)

The Lord alone is worthy of worship, honor, and praise.

There is no power, ruler, or authority that can challenge His sovereignty.

Jesus Christ Is Exalted Above All

The New Testament reveals the exalted position of Jesus Christ.

After His resurrection and ascension, God highly exalted Him.

"Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name; that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Philippians 2:9-11 (WEB)

Jesus Christ shares in the authority and glory given by the Father.

The Most High Is Our Refuge

The title "Most High" not only speaks of God's authority but also of His care for those who trust Him.

"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty."

Psalm 91:1 (WEB)

Those who trust in the Lord can find safety and security in Him.

Reflection

The title "The God Most High" reminds believers that God reigns over all things.

Consider these questions:

  • Do I recognize God's authority over my life?
  • Am I trusting His rule even when circumstances are difficult?
  • Do I worship Him as the King over all the earth?
  • Am I submitting myself to Jesus Christ, whom God has exalted?

The Most High remains sovereign over every generation.

Conclusion

The Bible reveals God as the Most High, the possessor of heaven and earth, the King over all nations, and the One whose kingdom will never end.

His authority is absolute, His rule is eternal, and His purposes cannot be stopped.

"For Yahweh Most High is awesome. He is a great King over all the earth."

Psalm 47:2 (WEB)

May we worship the Most High God, trust in His sovereign rule, and faithfully follow Jesus Christ our Lord.
