Elohim the God of power and might — Creator of heaven and earth, sovereign over all creation since Genesis 1:1, Psalm 19:1

Elohim: Understanding the God of Power and Might

Introduction

One of the first names used for God in the Bible is “Elohim.”

The Bible begins with these words:

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
 Genesis 1:1 (ESV)

From the opening verse of Scripture, God is revealed as the Creator of all things. Everything that exists owes its existence to Him.

The name Elohim points us to the greatness, power, and authority of God.

Elohim the Creator

The first chapter of Genesis repeatedly reveals God as the Creator.

“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”
 Genesis 1:3 (ESV)

By His word, God created:

the heavens

the earth

the seas

the stars

the animals

mankind

The psalmist declared:

“By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.”
 Psalm 33:6 (ESV)

God alone is the Creator of all things.

Elohim Reveals God's Power

The power of God is seen throughout creation.

“Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.”
 Jeremiah 32:17 (ESV)

The Lord is not limited by weakness or human ability.

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.”
 Isaiah 40:28 (ESV)

The greatness of creation points to the greatness of its Creator.

Elohim Is Sovereign Over All Things

God not only created the world, but He rules over it.

“The LORD has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.”
 Psalm 103:19 (ESV)

Nothing happens outside His authority.

The Lord reigns over nations, kings, and all creation.

“Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty.”
 1 Chronicles 29:11 (ESV)

Believers can trust the God who rules over all things.

Elohim and His People

The God who created the universe also calls a people to belong to Him.

God said to Abraham:

“And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.”
 Genesis 17:7 (ESV)

The Lord is not distant from His people. He reveals Himself, makes promises, and remains faithful to His word.

Jesus Christ and Creation

The New Testament reveals that all things were created through Jesus Christ.

“All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
 John 1:3 (ESV)

The apostle Paul wrote:

“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible.”
 Colossians 1:16 (ESV)

Jesus Christ is Lord over all creation.

Through Him, believers come to know God and receive eternal life.

Reflection

The name Elohim reminds believers that God is powerful, sovereign, and worthy of worship.

Believers should ask themselves:

Do I trust God as Creator?

Do I recognize His authority over my life?

Am I living according to His Word?

Is my faith in Jesus Christ?

The God who created all things is worthy of our worship and obedience.

Conclusion

Elohim reveals God as the Creator, Ruler, and Sustainer of all things.

From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture declares His power, authority, and faithfulness.

“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things.”
 Revelation 4:11 (ESV)

May believers worship Elohim, trust His Word, and follow Jesus Christ faithfully.
