Introduction
The title “Christ” is one of the most important titles given to Jesus in Scripture.
When Andrew found his brother Simon Peter, he said:
“We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).
John 1:41 (ESV)
Throughout the Scriptures, God promised that He would send His Anointed One to save His people and establish His kingdom. The New Testament reveals that Jesus is the promised Christ.
The Promised Messiah
The prophets spoke of the coming Messiah whom God would send.
“Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks.”
Daniel 9:25 (ESV)
The Old Testament pointed forward to the One whom God had chosen and appointed for His purposes.
Jesus Is the Christ
When Jesus asked His disciples who they believed Him to be, Peter answered:
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Matthew 16:16 (ESV)
Jesus affirmed this confession and revealed that it had been given by the Father.
The Gospel writers consistently present Jesus as the Christ promised in the Scriptures.
Jesus Declares the Fulfillment
When Jesus began His public ministry, He read from the prophet Isaiah in the synagogue:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.”
Luke 4:18 (ESV)
After reading the passage, Jesus said:
“Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
Luke 4:21 (ESV)
Jesus declared that the promises spoken by the prophets were being fulfilled in Him.
The Christ Suffers and Rises Again
The Christ came not only to teach but also to suffer and rise again according to God's plan.
After His resurrection, Jesus said:
“Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
Luke 24:26 (ESV)
The death and resurrection of Jesus were central to God's purpose of salvation.
Salvation Through Christ
The apostles proclaimed that salvation is found in Jesus Christ alone.
“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:12 (ESV)
Through Christ, forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to all who believe.
The Christ Reigns Forever
After His resurrection, Jesus was exalted by God and given all authority.
“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.’”
Matthew 28:18 (ESV)
His kingdom will never end.
“And he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Luke 1:33 (ESV)
Reflection
The title “Christ” reminds believers that Jesus is the One promised throughout the Scriptures.
Believers should ask themselves:
- Do I believe that Jesus is the Christ?
- Am I trusting Him for salvation?
- Am I following His teachings?
- Am I living under His authority?
Scripture calls all people to believe in Jesus Christ.
