El Shaddai God Almighty — His supreme power, provision, and protection for all who trust in Him, Psalm 91:1

God Almighty (El Shaddai)

Introduction

Among the names of God revealed in Scripture, “El Shaddai” means “God Almighty.” This name reveals God’s supreme power, authority, and sufficiency.

The Lord is mighty over all creation, and nothing is impossible for Him.

The first time this name appears in Scripture is when God spoke to Abram.

“When Abram was ninety-nine years old the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless.’”
 Genesis 17:1 (ESV)

El Shaddai reminds believers that God is all-powerful, faithful, and able to accomplish His purposes.

God Almighty Is Sovereign Over All Things

The Bible declares that God rules over heaven and earth.

“Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.”
 Jeremiah 32:17 (ESV)

The Lord created all things and governs all things according to His will.

“Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.”
 Psalm 115:3 (ESV)

No power,
no ruler,
and no kingdom
is greater than God Almighty.

El Shaddai and the Covenant With Abraham

God revealed Himself as El Shaddai when He established His covenant with Abraham.

The Lord promised Abraham that he would become the father of many nations.

“I will make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you greatly.”
 Genesis 17:2 (ESV)

Even though Abraham and Sarah were old, God fulfilled His promise.

“Is anything too hard for the LORD?”
 Genesis 18:14 (ESV)

El Shaddai is faithful to fulfill every promise according to His will.

God Almighty Protects and Sustains His People

The Lord is a refuge for those who trust in Him.

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.”
 Psalm 91:1 (ESV)

Believers can trust the Lord in times of fear, trouble, and weakness.

The psalmist declared:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
 Psalm 46:1 (ESV)

God Almighty sustains His people by His power and care.

Nothing Is Impossible for God

Scripture repeatedly reveals that nothing is beyond the power of God.

Jesus said:

“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
 Matthew 19:26 (ESV)

The angel Gabriel said to Mary:

“For nothing will be impossible with God.”
 Luke 1:37 (ESV)

God Almighty is able to save, deliver, strengthen, and accomplish His purposes perfectly.

Jesus Christ Reveals the Power of God

The New Testament reveals the power and authority of Jesus Christ.

Jesus calmed the storm,
healed the sick,
raised the dead,
and forgave sins.

“And they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, ‘We never saw anything like this!’”
 Mark 2:12 (ESV)

After His resurrection, Jesus said:

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
  Matthew 28:18 (ESV)

Jesus Christ is Lord, and through Him believers come to know God Almighty.

The Response of Believers

Because God is Almighty, believers are called to trust Him fully.

Believers should:

walk in faith

obey God’s Word

seek the Lord in prayer

trust His promises

rest in His power

The apostle Paul wrote:

“If God is for us, who can be against us?”
 Romans 8:31 (ESV)

The power of God gives believers confidence and hope.

Reflection

El Shaddai reminds believers that God is all-powerful and faithful.

In times of fear, weakness, uncertainty, or suffering, believers can trust the Lord who rules over all things.

Believers should ask themselves:

Do I trust the power of God?

Am I depending on the Lord or on myself?

Do I believe that nothing is impossible for God?

Am I walking faithfully before Him?

God Almighty remains faithful to His people.

Conclusion

El Shaddai — “God Almighty” — reveals the greatness, power, and authority of the Lord.

From Abraham to the coming of Jesus Christ, Scripture declares that God is mighty, faithful, and sovereign over all things.

“Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.”

May believers continue to trust in God Almighty, walk in faith, and follow Jesus Christ faithfully.
